(KGO) - Kien Hai island district (Kien Giang) is leveraging its marine potential, focusing on developing and innovating marine farming towards sustainable marine economy development.
Kien Hai district (Kien Giang) comprises over 23 large and small islands, with an area of more than 2,474 hectares and a population of over 18,000 people. Kien Hai has 4 communes: Hon Tre, Lai Son, An Son, and Nam Du, all of which meet the new rural standards, with one commune reaching advanced new rural standards. The local population primarily engages in marine-related activities, with some involved in gardening and commerce-services.
Nguyen Quoc Tuan, Chairman of the Kien Hai District People's Committee, stated that Kien Hai has the potential, strengths, and favorable natural conditions for developing a marine economy, especially in aquaculture and tourism services. Over the past four years (from 2019-2023), Kien Hai has received over 509 billion VND in investments to build key projects and constructions.
Currently, the transportation means from the mainland to the islands are ensured, adequately meeting the demand. Convenient transportation has contributed to improving the material and spiritual lives of the people and helped the district's economy grow significantly.
Hoang Ngoc Binh, Operations Director of Australis Kien Giang farming area (Australis Vietnam Seafood Co., Ltd.), said that the demand for developing marine farming is increasing, but there are still many obstacles in implementing marine farming projects, especially for foreign-invested enterprises. According to Tran Thi Hoi, Director of Thanh Hoa Farmers Cooperative, Nam Du commune (Kien Hai), the cage fish farming industry in Nam Du commune is developing. However, to develop cage fish farming sustainably, it is necessary to focus on solutions to reduce risks during farming and facilitate management processes.
"The relevant authorities of Kien Giang province and Kien Hai district should soon announce the zoning for aquaculture and ship anchoring areas in Nam Du commune. The government needs to have policies to encourage people to boldly invest in modern farming methods. The government should support farmers with the model of cage fish farming using HDPE pipes (Norwegian technology) to gradually modernize the cage fish farming industry in Nam Du commune," Tran Thi Hoi suggested.
Ta Thanh Tung, a resident of An Cu hamlet, An Son commune (Kien Hai), has over 10 years of experience in aquaculture. Mr. Tung is currently farming on 6 rafts with 24 cages (including 4 cages made of HDPE pipes), with more than 30,000 pearl grouper growing well. He plans to replace wooden rafts with those made of HDPE pipes.
"To support farmers in expanding aquaculture areas, relevant authorities should guide and encourage people to link with distribution, processing, and consumption facilities to form safe and sustainable aquaculture production and consumption chains," Ta Thanh Tung said.
Tran Quoc Viet, Secretary of the Kien Hai District Party Committee, stated that the local government is focusing on developing marine economic sectors towards increasing productivity, quality, and economic efficiency of each production type. Currently, Kien Hai has three enterprises: Australis Vietnam Seafood Co., Ltd., Mavin Group, and Hien Cong One Member Co., Ltd., approved by Kien Giang province to be allocated areas for aquaculture and seed production...
